Living in the UK - UK ResidencyThe full title of this country is 'the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland':
'Britain' is used informally, usually meaning the United Kingdom. The Union Flag, or 'Union Jack', is the national flag of the United Kingdom and is so called because it embodies the emblems of the three countries united under one Sovereign - the kingdoms of England and Wales, of Scotland and of Ireland (although since 1921 only Northern Ireland, rather than the whole of Ireland, has been part of the United Kingdom). 'God Save the King' was a patriotic song first publicly performed in London in 1745, which came to be referred to as the National Anthem from the beginning of the nineteenth century. The UK remains outside the Euro area and still uses pounds and pennies as its National currency. The National Archives, the British Library and the Parliamentary Archives hold the key documents relating to UK history. There's a lot of information available online. English is the official language of the United Kingdom and is spoken by around 400 million people around the world. If English is not your main language, you can do a course to help you improve your English. |
