Points Based System Tier 2 | Introduction

This Tier is aimed at attracting applicants who are skilled workers, such as teachers, nurse and engineers, who answer specific long term skills shortages in a particular sector and therefore fill labour market gaps that cannot be met by the domestic workforce. A new Skills Advisory Board will be set up to identify labour shortages in particular areas of the economy and will specify which jobs migrants can fill. The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development have expressed their concerns at the proposed skills advisory board needing to convince employers it had the ability to make realistic assessments of needs in different sectors. The number of points given to a skilled overseas worker will depend on their level of academic qualifications and projected earnings in the UK.

The Tier 2 Skilled Workers Tier is broken down into four categories:-
  • General: if you are a skilled worker with a job offer from a licensed sponsor coming to fill a gap in the workforce that cannot be filled by a settled worker;
  • Intra-company transfer: for employees of multi-national companies who are being transferred by an overseas employer to a skilled job in a United Kingdom based branch of the organisation;
  • Minister of religion: for people coming to the United Kingdom as a religious worker within a religious organisation for more than two years;
  • Sports person: for elite sports people and coaches who are internationally established at the highest level, and will make a significant contribution to the development of their sport.
