THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK

The legal framework for the issue of a Family Dependant visa is defined in the All Parliamentary 'Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules' issued since May 2003. In simple terms Family members wanting to live with their UK resident or British national family member can live in the UK by applying for a Family Dependant visa. A family member visa can be issued for a short or long term and will allow the holder of this visa to apply for permanent settlement after 4 years of residing with the UK sponsor.
